Na'u Nani (3) Road, Jan. 18, 2020
Na’u Nani, Road 3, at the intersection to Mauna Loa, is extremely dangerous to drive on.
Recent storms have washed away substantial amounts of base under the asphalt creating a 2- to 3-foot-deep void between the asphalt and the drainage pipe under the road. This gap puts the road at risk of collapsing.
Hawaii County and Aloha Estates Association have placed warning barriers at this intersection to prevent traffic from this danger. Unfortunately, people continue to remove these barriers.
Vehicles being driven over this part of the asphalt risk causing the road to collapse, putting people in danger of injury.
The Association has requested the County to place barriers blocking access to this portion of the road. The Association is also asking the County to look at long-term solutions.
For now, please avoid driving from Road 3, Na’u Nani, onto Mauna Loa. Tell your neighbors of the danger.
Finally, if you know who is responsible for removing the barriers, please ask them to stop in order to prevent potential harm to drivers. We will provide more information about road improvements as it comes available.
