Writer's picture: Leilani KrugerLeilani Kruger

Aloha all,

I hope this finds you all well. Due to Matt being away and out of the office, we will not be having our HISA meeting for this month. As this is our second meeting missed, I wanted to provide you with some County updates. Our office is also currently working on an e-newsletter, which will be made available on the County website once it is finished. 🙂

The new fiscal year 2023-2024 will begin on July 1, 2023. For those who want to read the official ordinances, the Capital Budget is Ordinance 23-51 and the Operating Budget is Ordinance 23-50 (available online at hawaiicounty.gov under “Our County” -> “Council Records”). Some highlights:

$20,000,000 - Puna Inter-Connectivity and Emergency Access Routes

$12,120,000 - Puna Roads Repair and Maintenance

$600,000 - Modifications and Relocation of Puna Water Spigot Stations

$2,000,000 - Puna Public Safety Complex

The new County Animal Control & Protection Agency will begin operations July 1, 2023. The agency will operate County pounds, seize and impound animals, designate animal control officers to enforce laws, and investigate animal cruelty and neglect cases. There will also be a dispatch number available to receive animal control calls.

The County will be having Fourth of July celebrations in both Hilo and Kona. Hilo celebrations consist of:

“A Salute to Our Veterans,” beginning at 7am - 5K Run/Walk at Hilo Bay, beginning at Lili’uokalani Gardens. For more info, visit www.ASaluteToOurVeterans.org or contact Archie Hapai at (808) 825-1917 or by email at 2023VFW38305K@gmail.com

“Hot Rides Expo,” from 10am-3pm - vintage, classic and futuristic vehicles, held at the Hilo mauka soccer fields. All show vehicles invited to participate at no charge and may roll in from 7:30am at the former gas station on the corner of Kamehameha Ave. and Pauahi St.

“Hilo Bay Blast,” beginning at 8pm - fireworks exhibition with professional pyrotechnics from a barge in Hilo Bay. Hawai’i County Band will present a live accompaniment at 7pm at the Mo’oheau Bandstand.

Please email me or Matt with any questions or concerns. Mahalo for your patience during this busy time. 😊
